CL-32 is a handheld computer designed by Pi0CKET developer Peter Barker (also known as moosepr). It adopts a retro design, is equipped with an e-ink screen, and is equipped with a GPIO expansion port, providing users with a unique programming and development experience.
The design of the CL-32 is inspired by the handheld computers of the 1980s. It is compact and easy to carry . Unlike the LCD screens of the time, the CL-32 used a larger e-ink screen that could clearly display 16 lines of text, with each line containing 36 characters . E-ink screens have the advantages of low power consumption, good readability in sunlight, and the ability to maintain display content even when powered off. The CL-32 is equipped with a 72-key keyboard. There are currently two designs: one is a traditional QWERTY keyboard with a 9-digit numeric keypad on the right side; the other design has not yet been determined . The developer stated that the final keyboard layout may be adjusted based on actual usage.
The core of CL-32 is the ESP32-S3 module, which is a dual-core 240 MHz XTensa processor with built-in 512 KB SRAM . The module supports 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0, and is equipped with a microSD card slot, USB Type-C interface and battery interface . The CL-32 is expected to use a BP-4L lithium battery with a capacity of 1200 to 1500 mAh, which can last for several days .
A major feature of the CL-32 is the expansion port consisting of 16 GPIO, power and ground, which can be connected to various sensors and peripherals to enhance the functionality of the device . The expansion port adopts a special low-profile "bottom plug-in" connector design, which ensures that the expansion board can only be installed in one direction, improving the stability and durability of the connection.
At present, the software environment equipped with CL-32 has not been announced. The developer said that it may use MicroPython, customized programming code, or based on Clem Meyer's ESP32-S3 Linux boot solution.
The CL-32 is a unique and expandable handheld computer. Its retro design, e-ink screen and ESP32-S3 processor provide developers and programming enthusiasts with a new creative platform .
